It’s Not What You Know, It’s Who You Know
Transcript
I love that phrase. It’s not what you know, it’s who, you know, and that is, of course, it’s partial white. It’s who, you know, and whether they like you when you’ve got a good relate, good enough relationship for them. So relatedness, people tend to think about a good relationship. And especially with women, it’s like, we feel good together and we feel good enough to be able to ask each other or be open with each other. And that’s not what relatedness is in total. What it is, is knowing who is who and knowing what their role is and what they can do.
I can have a great relationship and like somebody or love somebody, but know that they’re never going to deliver on time.
Relatedness isn’t just about being good and feeling good together. It’s about what can I count on you for? What can I trust you for? And so who you know is really related to that. We can’t do anything alone. If you want to be a founder, you’re talking about being a leader, there is no leader without a follower. That’s just not how it goes.
You’re going to need other people to follow you. You’re going to need other people to do the things that you’re not good at, whatever you’re good at. You’re not going to be good at everything. You can’t brush your teeth alone, right? Somebody made the toothpaste, somebody made the toothbrush. Somebody sold you that somebody shipped you, that you can’t do anything alone. If you’ve got a great company with a great product and you’re great at everything, you still need customers. You still need suppliers. So you’re just never going to do anything alone. It’s just not possible. That’s not how human beings are constructed.
Human beings are constructed as community animals and we work together. It isn’t what you know, it’s who, you know, and the good news is this is about getting to know people and you can get to know anybody.
I changed industries three years ago. There wasn’t the blockchain industry. Three years ago, none of my work colleagues today, or the same work colleagues that I had, I don’t live in the same country that I used to live in. I’m a known speaker in my industry in three years, you can get to know people. Now you have to be reliable and you have to come through because it’s not enough for people to like you. So they need to know who you are and what you can deliver. And you have to show that in some way or another. Relationships are what build things.
