I think there’s various examples. I’d like to bring one that is currently at the time of this recording of importance, at this time of COVID-19, we could see that economic elites will be a quite difficult situation, but what does it mean economically difficult? This basically means that if all the stocks are down, that’s the perfect time to start investing. And that as for the past years, I’ve been looking at different types of investing and I’m passionate about having my money working for myself.
I think it’s a topic where we, as women should be much more active anyway. So, what I did when mid March I realized, this is gonna be the next, rather serious downturn, I made the investment strategy. And that basically made me reflect, which types of companies will maybe have a dip down right now, but we will need them afterwards again. They will go back to normal, most likely, of course, they will have to function because we need them. So daily things, for example, not toilet paper, that’s not my focus actually. But that’s what I thought. And, you know, it opened my mind because I realized, wait a second, this is a situation of potential, maybe I’m financing my daughter’s university degree with investments I’m doing right now. So it puts everything in a different light. To me, it’s very much linked to being resilient. And being resilient also has a lot to do with, what will I do with this situation? We always have lots of prognosis and there’s nothing so uncertain as the future, but still media keeps telling us all, that the economy will go down, unemployment rates in certain industries. But personally, I have developed this idea and I really like the concept of making a re-gnosis. That means, three months ahead or six months ahead, how do I personally want to look back at this situation? And for me, it’s all about I want to look back and know that I did the best out of this difficult situation and I managed to grow from it. So, one example very personal was my investment strategy, but it goes further. I really think that the key, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s in a situation of crisis or in our daily life, it’s always about having our values very clear. So if you have clarity about your own values and your life vision or goals, that will help you, because if you don’t have a goal, you will end up nowhere and everywhere. If you know what you’re working for, having the end in mind as Stephen Kobe would say, that’s one of the key points.
And, maybe one more thing on the growth mindset often tend to compare each other and think “oh, this person is so successful”. “How did she do it?”. Everything is like delivered on the silver tablet for this person. And, honestly, we tend to only see the tip of the iceberg. And that’s maybe also something I can show personally, because sometimes what to the outside looked like a total success, to me personally felt absolutely the opposite, almost a failure, but at least a big mistake. I have one example. I once got interviewed for one of the major newspapers here in Switzerland. It was a great interview. I liked it. And, for some reason, I had to answer more questions than they could publish.
And when it got published, I was still disappointed because the two key questions I really wanted to share with the public, where I felt that this can add value, this can inspire and empower other women, they just weren’t published. So, I was getting tons of congratulations. “Wow what a great interview”. To myself, I was feeling “Ah, damn it! It did not work out the way I wanted”. So, please keep in mind that all the hard work we don’t see behind and that applies to everyone. I haven’t met the person that says “to me, everything just comes lightly”. And it doesn’t mean that it needs to be hard work, but just that there is work behind it. I like this idea that we work on things the way they come lightly to us, but there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
