When we think about a media kit in 2020, we can think about it way more dynamically. So, media kit is everything that you want to give people so that they understand who you are in a nutshell. And as you know, now people don’t have the time to sift through thousands of documents. They don’t care. So you need to give it to them as quickly and succinctly as possible. And there’s some companies that do really great media kits that are basically designed as a website or a landing page. And that can give you kind of like an interactive element that shows who you are as a company, what you do, has links to maybe relevant articles or, say, you have a book or a podcast. It’s really helpful to develop a media kit after your personal brand to think about: why am I doing this and what do I really stand for? You can start there and put that down into a hundred words and then pick the best links, the best media, the best photos, that really demonstrate who you are and why you’re doing this, then this is really like the first key to having a really authentic personal brand that resonates with your target audience.

When it comes to your personal photo or your profile picture, firstly you need to think about where this is going and who’s it for. So, I imagine for LinkedIn you’re really trying to think about having a much more serious photo, if that aligns with what you do on a professional basis. If you’re using Instagram just for fun, then maybe you want to have a picture that showcases your interests and hobbies such as traveling. But as we all know, people are also using Instagram now for business. So thinking about: does this picture show what I wanted to about my personal brand and the product or company that I’m trying to promote? So there are a kind of a few elements to think about is: who is this for? Where is it going and does this align with what I’m trying to promote there? And then I think the key to having a great profile picture is: do I feel good in this picture? Does this feel like me?

It’s such a great idea to hire a professional photographer. There is nothing like working with a professional photographer to make you really feel good about yourself and what you’re doing. That being said, it is very hard to find the right ones. So my first recommendation is: look in your personal network, anyone that you might know or feel comfortable with. Or also, scout out on Instagram or LinkedIn people that you know that have great pictures and find out who took those. Definitely social media and personal recommendations are a really great way to best find the photographer that’s right for you. And then after that, definitely checking that profile, having conversation about the kind of photos you want is totally important as well. And at the end of the day, you can also take one yourself. It’s so easy, like cameras these days are not that expensive, mobile phones actually take great quality photos. So don’t also feel like you have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on your first picture. I think the most important thing as with everything is to just get started.
