You have to learn to pitch. You’re going to be talking to people. Success never comes alone, you need other people, you need customers, you need investors, you need people to come and join your team. You have to learn to pitch because everything you say to all of these people is for one purpose only: to make strangers believe in you, trust in you, come and support you. Whether as employees, whether as customers, or as investors, you need other people for your success, and that comes through your words, that comes through your pitch. So it’s not a choice, you have to learn to pitch if you want to take your business idea anywhere at all.
Be able to talk about your business within one or two sentences. In ordinary words it’s called an elevator pitch, so you should be able to talk about your business without rambling on for hours and hours and boring people to death. So yes, an elevator pitch is absolutely necessary, which should never cross twenty seconds. The second important pitch that you absolutely need to have is your sales pitch. Now I know this goes against common wisdom, but I always insist; your best investors are your customers. So, focus on customers. Focus on sales. Focus on having a solid sales pitch. And then of course the third one is the investor pitch because sooner or later you might want to have investments, if you want. So, that’s the third important pitch to have.
There is a difference, a huge difference in pitching to customers and pitching to investors. But I will repeat again, your customers are your most important investors. However, the difference comes from the fact that the customer and the investors have different goals. Now I know as a business owner when you’re pitching, your entire focus is on yourself, your product, my business, I did this, I’m creating this awesome product, but pitching is about the person you’re talking to. What does that person really want, why should that person listen to you at all? So, the purpose of a sales pitch is to get those strangers. Turn those strangers into repeat customers. The purpose of an investor pitch is to find long term business partners, look at them as your business partners. What they are interested in is not what your product will do for them. What they’re interested is how your business model will help them. So the customer cares for the use of your product. The investor cares for the business model, the profit. These are different goals of different categories, therefore these pitches have to be different.
We have a natural ability to connect with people and also, we learn so naturally to think about other people, and pitching really is about caring about who you’re talking to, trying to give them a genuine benefit and not just about your profit, your business, your sale, your success. And if you bring this instinct into your pitch it becomes instantly connection-worthy for whoever you’re talking to. I’ll give you a small tip on how you can use your pitching to connect better with other people. Try to think of your product or service or your offer as a gift. Don’t think of money, like take money completely out of the equation, and just think of your product as a gift. When you’re giving a gift to someone you don’t expect anything in return. You’re giving them because you love, you care. So think about your product like that. When you’re giving something to someone, it’s a gift to someone. What are the magical feelings of connection, of love, of care that come to you? Bring those in your pitch, and it will genuinely become about the other person and therefore can become easy for them to feel connected to you.
