I’ll start with the biggest one and this might be surprising. No one is interested in your story. Maybe your mother or maybe father, but no one else. This might surprise you because I’m talking about storytelling.
Your story only is interesting for your potential customer if you are a leading figure, if you are a guide, that helps them overcome their struggles, because you are not the hero of the story. You are the guide. For example, Lord of the Rings, you are Gandalf. You’re not Frodo who brings the ring. You’re Gandalf, that guides the way.
People mix that up. They think they have to tell their story, don’t tell your story, tell your story as a guide. Show them that you know the way to solve their problem.
The second mistake I always see is, think that only your story, even as a guide, is storytelling. Everything that I’m doing is storytelling, and you don’t have to tell always a whole story. Sometimes, just share a struggle of your hero and show that you know how the struggle looks like, how the struggle feels, how the struggle tastes.
And, the third mistake I often see that people rush to the happy end. And then they miss one of the most important parts, and that’s the villains, that’s disaster, that’s a dark hole, dark pit they can fall in. You need to describe, to paint a picture before the happy end. If they don’t work with you, if they don’t purchase you, this is what happens to them. This is the disaster that can come upon them. So you paint two pictures, one of the disaster and one of the happy end, and please don’t forget the villains.
Like, I don’t tell people that I’m just a storyteller that uses sales psychology. I’m saying the outcome. I’m reaching people’s heart, brain, and purse. There’s a little story, even in my tech life, you can use it everywhere. Just think about the outcome you want for your customer and bring it. People are not interested, how you do it. They just want it to be done.
It is a great way to address objections, because you will find objections all over the place when it comes down to selling. A great way to address objections is share a story with one of your clients. And the story needs to be true. That’s very, very important. Don’t share made up stories. People feel it. People have a sense for it, that you are not honest. But for example, I’m sharing a story of a young mother with two young children and with my techniques, with the story marketing academy, she was able to build a successful online business, even with two small kids. And she’s telling that story herself. So, go to your happy customers, ask them if they share their story, and that you can use it. And that’s what I’m doing very often. Because then they don’t have to believe me. Then they can believe someone else. Who shares her or his story
