In this first exercise, we challenge you to declutter your life in 1 minute! You heard that right! We meant 1 minute, no more than 60 seconds. How do you ask? Well, we found this amazing exercise from Gretchen Rubin! It’s simple. The main idea is to immediately accomplish any task that comes up if it takes less than a minute to complete.
Beat Clutter in 1 Minute
Accomplish any task that comes up if it takes less than a minute to complete.
Now you may be wondering how this happens.
Let’s take some examples of instances when this can occur.
- You just got out of bed in the morning and are off to work. Do you fix your bed? Why yes of course! Take that 40 seconds to arrange them properly before going on with the day. You’ll feel so much better seeing them clean and fixed when you sleep at night.
- You just got home after a long day at the co-working. You’re tired and kick off your shoes because your family is waiting for you to prepare dinner. Do you leave your shoes messily on the corner? No, you take the extra 30 seconds to arrange them in your shoe rack, instead of having to worry about them later.
- You get an email and ignore it, telling yourself you’ll reply in a while but then you forget to do that! Next thing you know you have a mountain of emails to respond to. If you take that extra 40 seconds to answer those quick emails, look at how much time and stress it will save you in the long run!
- You have a mug of coffee that’s been on your desk for 2 days already because you get yourself a fresh cup every time. If you took the extra time to wash them after using them, they wouldn’t have to start piling up!
- This goes the same if you work from home! You go out, then get home, and back to work in your office. You throw your jacket on top of a chair or by your bed and forget about it completely. If you take the extra 30 seconds, it would look so much neater and it wouldn’t start cluttering.
Survey your room or office right now
It seems simple to do but you’ll notice how much of a huge difference it makes! Survey your room or office right now, do you see any mess that you just left there days ago? Now think again, if you had applied the one-minute rule, you would have prevented all that clutter! You would save yourself time having to fix up one whole Sunday afternoon, all the mess that has piled, or all the emails unanswered. You will also feel and think so much better when you're in a clean and organized environment. This will help you achieve balance for your well-being.
