I did my coaching training in Switzerland around 10 years ago. Ever since I really wanted to do it, I didn’t dare. There were those voices I think they came not from outside, they came from myself: ‘Others doing better. I’m not skilled enough. Who am I to support someone? I need support myself.’ What else? There are enough coaches out there, the market is full. So those were the voices in my head, mainly self-doubt also this about the market. And after I came back from working and living abroad to Germany after many years, I thought, so now either I do it or never, this is the advantage of being a little bit older. You feel, oh your lifetime is limited, I do it now or never. And then I noticed in my daily life, there’re so, so, so many people in need, so many people are in trouble. There is a need. And I did it [as] like I coached for free all the time. I mean, people approached me telling me their stories and I try to support them, asking questions, trying to change the perspective. And at a certain point, I thought now I have to reach another point. Now I do it in a professional way. And when I look back now, I wish I did it earlier. There is a need and it’s fun to do it, it’s fulfilling. But on the other hand, I also know you need [an] individual process to get ready for it. You have to feel ready or you’ll decide and don’t feel ready yet. But I do it anyway. And if I could talk now to a woman who’s 20 years younger than me, I would say, you don’t feel ready, do it anyway. Don’t waste your time. Quit jobs you don’t love you don’t like. We are all learners. You can learn everything, you learn from experience, you learn through life. So go for it.
First of all, I would ask a question. Do you love to learn? Do you love to reflect on yourself? Do you love to take care of yourself, of your person, of your own personal growth? Is this important for you? Does it make you happy? Do you feel inspired by reading and gaining new insights about life and personal development? I think if you can say yes to these questions, that’s your thing to do. Are you interested in people, in the patterns of life? Do you love diversity in people? Do you like questions? Then it’s for you. If you think you have all the answers already in life, that’s not for you. But if you have more questions than answers in life, then there is an attitude of interest of a aliveness then it is for you. Do you enjoy deep conversation more than small talk? Then it is for you. Are you interested in other people’s lives sometimes more than your own? It’s for you. Do you define yourself just about success and achieving something or is your thinking more process-oriented, you’ll think more in a way to go in movements and trying out things, then it’s for you. When you want just to achieve goals then it’s not for you. Since I started this work, no I knew before that it is for me because people approached me when they were in trouble. And I knew after our conversations they felt better, all they had another idea. I can’t give advice but I can give them [a]n impulse. And if you have this experience then you can enrich the life [lives] of other people by your creativity, by your ideas also by your questions, your unsolved questions, then I think it’s for you. And I have something else. This is the fun part more. And going this way I noticed it needs discipline. To build this business you have to do a lot of things that are not fun. For me all the technical side of this, of the online coaching, I had to learn a lot of things. I didn’t really want to learn the admin, the texts, all these things, you have to do it. It’s part of the game. You do first the things you really dislike, and then the fun things. And knowing that it’s not just the joy of being in touch with people, but also it requires to do the things, and even to learn things, If you’re not willing to maintain this discipline to do the work also to do hard work, it’s not for you, but if you want it’s for you.
