Authenticity and leadership mean staying true to yourself, saying what you think and acting like you said you would act. So an authentic leader acts congruently to her beliefs and her desires and aims to make herself independent from external pressures and external expectations. Being an authentic leader is challenging, but it’s very important because as a leader you have a lot of responsibility, of course. And this also for yourself and for others. And so, for all, including you, it is the fairest way to be authentic.
Also, in the end, it saves a lot of energy to be authentic because adapting to other people’s opinions and trying to people please all the time will in the long term lead to inner and outer conflicts.
Being an authentic leader also makes you a respected leader because it’s way nicer to work with people who stay true to themselves and who stay true to what they said. Let me give you an example. If you try to make yourself and your business fit into, for example, an investor’s opinion just to get the money. And you forget to stay true about yourself and you do not really act [as] like you said. And you do not really say some things that you really think, this will in the long term be to your disadvantage because you might get the money. But this would be based on things that you are not 100 % your own ideas or that are not the things you are really convinced of. If you do not stay true to yourself in this case, it would be also an uncomfortable situation because you find yourself suddenly following other people’s instructions instead of your own. And this won’t make you happy at all.
