Genevieve Van Voorhis, Founder of Lighthouse Nanny UG
Like a great deal of young women that move to Berlin to pursue a career in a creative field, Genevieve van Voorhis found herself working quite regularly as a babysitter and nanny. During this time, between 2014 and 2022, she realized two things about the private childcare market in the city: First—In an international city like Berlin, families jumped at the chance for their kids to spend time with an English-speaking nanny, in the hopes that they would pick up the language and accent more easily. Second—Despite the high demand for English-speaking nannies and babysitters, there was no program in place for helping newcomers easily and legally start working in this field. After about 8 years of consideration, 3 start-up layoffs, and 1 year of paperwork, Lighthouse Nanny was born.
