Self-aware
Transcript
Self-awareness means knowing yourself really well and in a deep way, it means knowing, understanding, and owning your personal story. Knowing what made you the person you are today and it means that you know who or what drives you, who or what inspires you, and also who or what triggers you.
As a leader, it is important to be self-aware because you are acting as a role model and you guide people. People trust you. And as a leader, you interact and communicate with persons nearly all the time of your day. So self awareness helps you to manage social interactions, communication well and manage difficult situations in a responsible way, regards to you and also to others.
For example, imagine there’s a team member who triggers you for some reason. Doesn’t matter now. As a self aware leader, you are able to notice this and think, aah OK. He or she triggers me, which is a huge advantage compared to a not so self-aware leader? Because now you are also able to dive deeper and to like pause the situation. You can from this point go deeper and ask yourself questions like, “why is it that way?”, “In which situations do I realize that this person triggers me?”, “How do I react?”, “How do I want to react instead?”, And “what do I need to react in the way I want to?”
So you can learn from this experience as a self-aware leader. And after asking yourself such questions, you are able to handle the situation way easier. And compared to a not so self aware leader, the same situation might be left unsolved or might result in a conflict or drama. So self awareness is a great quality and you should aim to get more self awareness.
